NCD Chairman to participate in DOT celebration of Americans with Disabilities Act

National Council on Disability (NCD) Chairman Neil Romano will take part in a U.S. Department of Transportation online event celebrating 30 years of America’s landmark civil rights law for people with disabilities.

The event, “Breaking Down Barriers: Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act,” takes place on Thursday, July 30, from 2 - 4 p.m. EDT.

Chairman Romano will provide remarks immediately following remarks by Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.

After the Chairman’s remarks, two panel discussions will take place.

The event will bring together leaders across the government to acknowledge accomplishments in transportation that have resulted from this landmark civil rights legislation. In addition to celebrating the ADA’s success, speakers will also discuss what actions need to be taken to ensure an accessible transportation future for all Americans.

Mr. Romano was appointed to NCD in February 2015. In 2018, he was reappointed for a second term of three years by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and designated as Chairman by President Donald J. Trump.

First established as an advisory council within the Department of Education in 1978, NCD became an independent federal agency in 1984. In 1986, NCD recommended enactment of an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and drafted the first version of the bill which was introduced in the House and Senate in 1988. Since enactment of the ADA in 1990, NCD has continued to play a leading role in crafting disability policy, and advising the President, Congress and other federal agencies on disability policies, programs, and practices.
